Zahra, this was a heartbreaking yet beautiful article. It saddens me to see what is currently happening to Generation Alpha... it's horrifying that we're raising a generation that's living on screens..

I love recess therapy, especially miles! I work with a lot of young adults around screen time and doomscrolling and a lot of it is linked to feelings of helplessness around the bigger, scarier things going on in the world, need for instant gratification and that dopamine feedback. Often, a gentle reminder to go touch grass as the gen z's like to say can help. I encourage my young adults to go out and *participate* in the world as a solution and to focus on building routine as a way of warming their toes to discipline. It does feel like an obituary to youth having grown up in a generation before iPhones and and and pieces like this are a great reminder of all of us who continue to show up in ways that are different, we can be different. As always, thanks for writing!

I ADORE miles 😭🥺

It is so sad that such an unhealthy, detrimental habit is already born from such a heavy weight to bear. It’s refreshing though to remember that there are professionals like you offering these necessary reminders, especially in a time when so many adults just put a screen in front of a kids face so they can return to their own scrolling. Thanks for doing what you do, the village needs it! And thank you for reading and engaging so thoughtfully 💕

This is so beautiful and unfortunately undeniable! A few days ago, I embarked on writing a new chapter of my book titled " expatriation and parenting". Your points resonated with me so much and I have the same fears. It is so challenging to raise a child in this time and age, and technology and politics make it even more overwhelming and stressful. Your words are so truthful and on point. Thanks for writing this fr!

Thank you so much for reading and for your kind words dearest Marwa! Absolutely - I don’t even have kids but even just as a member of the village it only seems to be getting more difficult. I can image with the added layer of migration that the toll on children would be insurmountable. Best of luck with your book journey 🤍

You have captured a grave problem at hand beautifully,

Have you read the work of jhonathan haidt - he gives really good solutions to modern day screen struggles, in his book the anxious generation.

Reading this in parts (not owing to a damaged attention span, but time lol). Already so many accurately observed and diagnosed symptoms of the modernity we’ve grown up with, and those after us. This feels like an essay of the time, no particularity needed about what your point is; although that’s there too. I like how you narrated this
